Ingredients

For the crispy onions
  • 1 large large onion, thinly sliced Choose a sweet onion for best results
  • 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 cup cornmeal Can be substituted with panko breadcrumbs for extra crunch
  • 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon paprika Adds a subtle smokiness
  • Salt and pepper, to taste Adjust seasoning to personal taste
  • Cooking spray or a small amount of oil To prevent sticking

Method

Preparation
  1. Begin by peeling and thinly slicing the onion into rings or strips, about 1/4 inch thick.
  2. In a mixing bowl, combine the all-purpose flour, cornmeal, garlic powder, paprika, salt, and pepper. Mix well so that the dry ingredients are evenly distributed.
  3. Toss the sliced onions into the dry mixture, ensuring that each piece is well coated.
Cooking
  1. Preheat the air fryer to 300°F (150°C) for about 5 minutes.
  2. Lightly spray the air fryer basket with cooking spray or use a small amount of oil to prevent sticking.
  3. Place the coated onion slices in the basket in a single layer, making sure not to overcrowd them; cook in batches if necessary.
  4. Air fry the onions for 15-20 minutes, shaking the basket halfway through. Look for a nice golden color and crisp texture to know they’re done.
  5. Once they are well-cooked, remove the crispy onions and allow them to cool slightly before serving.

Notes

Serve immediately for the best texture. If storing leftovers, use an airtight container and consume within a day or two. Reheat in the air fryer to restore crispiness.
