Ingredients

For the cake
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup vegetable oil
  • 1 cup water
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 tablespoon white vinegar
For the ganache
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 8 ounces chocolate, chopped

Method

Preparation
  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a cake pan with flour to prevent sticking.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking soda, and salt. Mix until well blended.
  3. In another bowl, whisk together the vegetable oil, water, vanilla extract, and vinegar until thoroughly combined.
  4. Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and mix until the batter is smooth and lump-free.
  5. Transfer the batter into your prepared cake pan, ensuring an even layer.
Baking
  1. Bake in the preheated oven for 30 to 35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
  2. Remove the cake from the oven and let it cool completely in the pan.
Ganache Preparation
  1. For the ganache, heat the heavy cream in a saucepan over medium heat. Stir until it just begins to boil.
  2. Pour the heated cream over the chopped chocolate in a bowl and stir until you have a smooth, glossy mixture.
Assembly
  1. Once the cake is completely cool, pour the ganache over the top, allowing it to drip down the sides for an elegant finish.
  2. Slice and serve to enjoy the ultimate chocolate experience.

Notes

Ensure your cake pan is well-greased to prevent sticking; this will help in achieving a clean slice. Mix the batter just until combined; overmixing can lead to a dense cake. Let the ganache cool slightly before pouring it onto the cake to ensure it sets beautifully without running off too quickly. Top the ganache with chocolate shavings or nuts for added texture and flavor if desired. For extra richness, serve with vanilla ice cream.
